™” width=”254″ height=”253″ />AFC Cable Systems® has developed a new cable called AC-Plus™, made with a neutral per phase construction. It reduces the labor and installation costs that using multiple 12/2 AC-90® products require by providing the necessary neutral per phase conductors.
The current New York City Electrical Code was adopted in 2011. Section 210.4(B) of the NYC Code requires the simultaneous disconnect of ungrounded conductors in a multi-wire branch circuit. This regulation requires multi-wire branch circuits to have a simultaneous disconnect for safety purposes. Often, work on lighting circuits for light or ballast replacement is conducted while other lights on the same multi-wire branch circuit remain on. This presents a safety hazard due to the possibility of contractors and electricians working on live circuits. This often occurs in settings where work cannot be stopped in one part of building area to allow for repair or replacement work in another.
This rule does permit individual 12/2 circuits or neutral per phase constructions to be run to lighting and equipment to avoid having to turn all circuits off. This allows power to remain on in other parts of the building while eliminating power to only the circuits needed.
NYC Code Section 210.12(B) requires Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) protection for virtually all living areas, such as family rooms, dining rooms, living rooms, parlors, libraries, dens, bedrooms, sunrooms, recreation rooms, closets, and hallways.
Arc Fault Circuit Interrupter (AFCI) manufacturer literature recommends that each AFCI circuit breaker be wired with its own neutral conductor (No Shared Neutrals). This permits individual 12/2 circuits or neutral per phase constructions to be run for each branch circuit protected by the AFCI Circuit Breaker.
To aid in this process, AFC Cable Systems® has developed AC-Plus™ cable with a neutral per phase construction. Currently available in 12/2 and 10/2 configurations, AC-Plus™ cable provides the necessary neutral per phase conductors, reducing the labor and installation costs that using multiple 12/2 AC-90® products require.
The NYC Electrical Code applies to Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island. For areas outside of New York City that use Metal Clad Cable, AFC also offers MC-Plus® Neutral per Phase cable.
